Zinc is involved in the body's enzymatic reactions, the synthesis of proteins, in carbohydrate metabolism, in proper cell formation and functioning. Afflictions that may occur in a deficiency of Zinc includes schizophrenia and other psychiatric disorders, diabetes, prostate enlargement, cataracts, macular degeneration (a cause of blindness), heart disease, brain and nervous system deterioration, immune malfunctions, inadequate digestion, ulcers, food allergies, toxic metal accumulation, poor wound healing, colds, osteoporosis, skin problems, fatigue, lack of appetite, hearing impairments, eating disorders, and the many symptoms of a blood sugar imbalance! An essential treatment for such neurological/psychiatric disorders as schizophrenia, clinical depression, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, Huntington's disease, acute psychosis, dementia, anorexia nervosa, attention deficit disorder, and "hearing voices", that should be taken along with Manganese, and B Vitamins. A Zinc deficiency plays a role in Alzheimer's disease because the Zinc-dependent thymus hormone is almost undetectable in people affected. Like Vitamin C, Zinc knocks out cold viruses, if you catch them early enough.1 A study found that by taking Zinc lozenges, it cut the cold symptoms by almost 50 percent.2 One of the most important strategies to stabilize the immune system and reduce complications, AIDS patients should restore their Zinc levels with 100 mg. daily.3 Zinc is required to produce thymulin, a major thymus hormone. It stimulates the production of white blood cells, one of the immune system's tumor-fighting components. Its ability to balance blood sugar, in assisting the pancreas to make insulin and protect the receptor sites, and in helping lower cholesterol in people with diabetes, makes Zinc a valuable medical contribution. Just about all skin disorders, especially acne, improve with Zinc supplementation. Weeks or months may pass before you notice improvement. Zinc is fundamental to the sexual and reproductive health of both genders. A group of men in their sixties actually doubled their serum testosterone levels. Benign prostate enlargement is strongly tied to a lifetime of inadequate Zinc intake. In women, a host of pregnancy-related problems, including spontaneous abortion, toxemia, growth retardation, and delivery problems, are associated with a deficiency of Zinc. As a first-aid treatment for any skin wound or irritation, people reach for calamine lotion, which is rich in Zinc. It's also effective for canker sores, and a must before and after any surgery. An extremely valuable treatment for rheumatoid arthritis is a combination of Zinc and Copper. The ratio should be roughly 8 parts Zinc to 1 part Copper. Avoid taking it with Calcium (reduces Zinc absorption by up to 50 percent) and Zinc is quickly expelled from the body from all kinds of stress.
