Witch Hazel contains generous amounts of tannins--potent, soothing, cooling astringents that are useful in treating skin problems.

Commission E endorses using Witch Hazel extract and water externally for treatingWitch Hazel dermatitis, hemorrhoids, bruises, varicose veins and other conditions that damage the skin.

Studies with laboratory animals have shown that it helps strengthen blood vessels.

Simply wipe the affected area with a cotton ball that has been dipped in the extract. Tincture of Witch Hazel can be taken internally for varicose veins. Or, make a tea by steeping one to two teaspoons of dried Witch Hazel in a cup of boiling water for ten minutes and drink two to three cup daily.

In one study on sunburn patients, Witch Hazel (combined with Lecithin), performed admirably when compared with 1% hydrocortisone and Chamomile.
