| Vitamin B2
functions in the metabolism as a coenzyme in oxidation and reduction
reactions (read more about redox and free radicals) and is needed for
proper conversion of tryptophan to Niacin,
and for transformation and activation of a number of othe vitamins,
notably Pyridoxine, Folic
Acid, and Vitamin K. It is necessary for the breakdown of fat,
and for the synthesis of corticosteroids, red blood cells, and glycogen.
Interactions:
Sunlight destroys Riboflavin.
Facilitates Iron absorption, mobilization, and
retention.
Increases in exercise and physical work, increase Riboflavin requirements.
Thyroid hormone enhances the conversion of Riboflavin to its active
coenzyme forms.
Aldactone (a blood pressure drug) increases the conversion of Riboflavin
to its coenzyme forms. Spironolactone (an aldosterone antagonist also used
to ptreat blood pressure) blocks the conversion.
Chlorpromazine (used in depression & psychoses) inhibits the
conversion of Riboflavin to one of its coenzyme forms.
The tricyclic antidepressants, imipramine & amitriptyline, inhibit
Riboflavin metabolism, especially in the heart tissue.
Boric acid increases excretion (or loss) of Riboflavin. (And treatment
with Riboflavin has been used clinically to reverse Boric acid
intoxication.)
