Although chemically unrelated to the
tranquilizer Valium, Valerian has been nicknamed "the Valium of the nineteenth
century." In fact, it is said that Valium was named for Valerian. Valerian is a safe
and natural alternative to sedative drugs like Valium.
It is used worldwide to relieve
nervous tension, stress, hysteria and improves the quality of sleep; important for those
suffering from insomnia. In a double-blind study involving 128 subjects, an extract of
Valerian Root helped participants to sleep better, improved the quality of sleep and
reduced the time required to fall asleep--and it did it not leave a telltale
"hangover" or morning sleepiness when Valepotriates within Valerian Root exerts a profound sedative effect upon the central nervous system. Once ingested these compounds attach themselves to individual receptor sites within portions of the brain, spine and nervous system, where they help to remove stress, tension and may even relieve backaches and the occassional migraine headache. For centuries, herbalists have used Valerian to treat panic attacks. Unlike prescription drugs, Valerian has the advantage of not being addictive or having any side effects. Valerian may ease menstrual cramps and PMS. It can also be used to relieve gas, intestinal cramps and in treating low fevers and colds. According to The Scientific Validation of Herbal Medicine and Herbal Tonic Therapies, Valerian also contains proven anti-arrhythmic compounds. In fact, this herb was used for arrhythmias and palpitations in Roman times. Valerian also has other heart benefits: It lowers blood pressure, increases blood flow to the heart and improves the heart's pumping ability. It is best not to drive while taking Valerian, since it may make you drowsy. An overdose may result in a dangerous weakening of the heartbeat. If you experience an upset stomach, try taking your dosage at mealtime.
