possibilities. St. John's Wort is a highly valued herb that has been used in healing for
more than two thousand years. Because it contains both immune-enhancing and antiviral
components, this herb has been heartily welcomed for by many HIV/AIDS researchers. It has
significant concentrations of immune-modulating flavonoids, and also contains hypericin, a
substance that is both antiviral and antidepressive.
Its also well known to act as a natural
antidepressant and provides valuable relief to those suffering from anxiety, tension and
stress. Tension headaches may also respond well to treatment with St. John's.
A common herbal recommendation for menstrual cramps and the symptoms of menopause, like
irritability.
Because of its antiviral qualities, it may act as an effective remedy for attacks of
herpes simplex, which are often brought on by stress.
Sometimes used in the treatment of sciatica, rheumatism. Helps in cerebrospinal
problems, such as hydrocephalus (excessive accumulation of fluid enlarging the
cerebral ventricles).
For treating any kind of trauma to the nervous system, the tincture may be given
internally or rubbed on the spinal column, especially in extreme shock or hysteria with
good results. When drops are given orally, they should be placed slowly beneath the front

Externally, this versatile herb is used in the healing of bruises, minor burns (such as
sunburn), psoriasis, varicose veins and wounds.
Warning: Do not take if you are taking any
MAO inhibitors or anti-depressants. Caution: Consumption of hypericin may
render the skin photosensitive. Care should be taken during exposure to
sunlight, tanning lights or UV sources. If you are pregnant or lactating,
consult your physician before taking this product.

Most trials use about 900 mg of a
standardized extract. The effect takes two to three weeks to appear.
Safety: Taken all by itself, St. John's wort is quite safe -- much safer
than conventional antidepressant drugs. But, this herb has serious
interactions with other medicines.
These include blood thinners (anticoagulants), oral contraceptives, HIV
drugs, and other antidepressant medications (particularly SSRI-type drugs
such as Prozac).
ALWAYS consult a doctor if taking St. John's wort along with any other drug.
