Rich in antioxidants, this herb used mainly as a spice, may actually prevent Alzheimer's disease.

British researchers have confirmed that it inhibits the enzyme that breaks down acetylcholine, thus preserving the compound that seems to help prevent and treat Alzheimer's.

Sage contains fairly high levels of antiseptics and tannins. Tannins have a soothing, astringent action and an anti-microbial effect. Six anti-inflammatory compounds were identified in Sage.

Gargling several times a day with warm Sage tea treats mouth sores, canker sores, inflammations of the mouth and throat, sore throat, loss of voice, tonsillitis, bad breath, as well as helping to remove mucus from congested lungs. Make a strong Sage tea by using two teaspoons of the dried herb with each cup of boiling water, steep until cool and then gargle. Take one to one-half cup every few hours as needed. Add a quarter teaspoon of fresh lime juice and gargle well before swallowing for raw, irritated throat.

Commission E endorses using two to three teaspoons of Sage per cup of boiling water to make an anti-gingivitis tea.

Studies by a team of scientists from the Dept. of Microbiology and Chemotherapy at the Nippon Roche Research Center in Japan, indicates that powdered Sage or Sage tea helps prevent blood clots from forming and is quite useful in the prevention and treatment of myocardial infarction and general coronary pains (heart problems).

Sage helps to stop the flow of milk from former nursing mothers. Take two cups of warm Sage tea daily for up to a week. Bring a quart (~liter) of water to a boil and steep eight teaspoons of Sage for 45 minutes covered. Strain, add honey and drink.

The herb allegedly has the ability to prevent hair loss and maintain hair color. Try adding a few teaspoons of Sage tincture to your favorite shampoo. May also alleviate wrinkles when used as a tea.

You can darken gray or white hair by making the infusion below and rubbing a small amount into the roots 4-5 times a week. When hair darkens, apply once or twice weekly for maintenance. In a heavy ceramic bowl put 2 heaping tablespoons of Sage (dried) and Orange Pekoe or Black Tea. Fill the bowl half full of boiling water, cover and place in warm oven (275ºF), or use a large pan, full of boiling water and place on stovetop on low setting for at least a couple of hours. Then allow to cool, stir well and strain.

Stops profuse and excessive sweating usually within two hours and lasts for several days. Bring four cups of water to a boil, add one teaspoon each of Hops, fresh-cut rose petals, fresh or dried Strawberry Leaves, fresh walnut leaves and three teaspoons of dried Sage. Cover, remove from heat and steep for an hour. Strain and add honey, if desired.

A tincture of Sage is also good for reducing perspiration. Combine a little more than a half cup of dried powdered Sage with 1¼ cups of vodka or vermouth. Let stand for two weeks in a sealed bottle, shaking twice each day. Strain and store in another bottle. Take 25 drops 3-4 times daily as needed.

An ingredient to the "Candidicidal Soup", a tasty soup used to treat recurring yeast infections.

Sage, as a spice, delivers a warm pungency to poultry and fish stuffings, soups, cheeses, dips, gravies, stews, poultry, wild game and stewed or baked vegetables like carrots, eggplants and tomatoes.
