Floral Ice Candle

divider wave leaf.gif (317 bytes)

This candle is a combination of the traditional ice candle  using ice chips with an added floral touch of dried flowers. This candle can also be made without dried flowers if desired.

1 milk or juice carton, one quart size
1/2 oz dried rose petals
1 cup ice chips
1 lb Beeswax
1 white tapered 6 inch candle
1/2 oz fragrance oil (we'll use Rose for this candle)

To begin, cut the top of the container off to remove the pouring spout from the carton. Melt the wax slowly on low heat in a double pan. Pour a small amount of the hot wax in the carton to measure approximately 1/4 inch of wax in the bottom of carton. Center the tapered candle in the carton, the wax in the bottom of the carton is to hold the tapered candle in place while preparing the ice chips. You might have to hold the candle for a few minutes for the candle to stand freely in the wax.
To prepare for the next step, you will need some ice cubes. A tray full should be enough. Place the ice cubes in a thick zip lock baggy and beat them with a meat hammer or large spoon. Not to hard, but hard enough so that you have ice chips rather than cubes.
*Now, add a small amount of ice chips around the candle, approximately an inch high from the bottom. Place a few dried flowers around the outer edge of the ice chips, being sure to place these flowers as close to the edge as possible. (If you get them too close to the candle they can catch on fire while the candle is burning.) Pour wax on the ice chips until the wax comes to the top of the ice chips. (You are working now in a layering pattern.)
Continue from (*) until you reach the top of the candle. Pour wax until wax is level with the tapered candle. Let candle sit for 6 hours. After 6 hours, turn the candle upside down over the sink while still in the carton. This allows most of the water to run out of the candle. Tear away the carton from the candle carefully, while holding it over the sink for excess water to drain.
Let candle dry for 24 hours before burning. Congratulations, you now have a Floral Ice Candle.
