A remedy recommended by Dr. Weil and other natural-medicine physicians is Quercetin, a bioflavonoid which seems to stabilize the membranes of the cells that release histamine (histamine triggers allergic reactions). Since its action is preventative, it's best to start taking Quercetin a week or two before the expected onslaught of allergy season, continuing until the end. Studies have shown that Quercetin is both an antihistamine, which can block allergic reaction, as well as an anti-inflammatory, which will prevent the breathing passages from becoming irritated. Along with allergies it's also used for viral infections, including HIV and inflammation due to arthritis and injury. Experimental studies have shown a possible benefit to those with gout (a form of arthritis), according to The Encyclopedia of Natural Medicine, (338). For best results, it should be taken with Vitamin C (as with all flavonoids, as it increases Vitamin C absorption and are themselves powerful antioxidants) and Bromelain.
Capsule: 400-750 milligrams twice a day, between meals.
