Peppermint is a classic, traditional home remedy
for colds, flu and digestive upsets. It relieves fever and chills. Use in combination with
Elder or
White Willow to tame a
high fever.
Because it contains a volatile oil that relaxes the stomach, it is used for
a wide range of indigestion problems, such as flatulence (gas), nausea, vomiting,
heartburn, stomachache, morning sickness, colic and diarrhea.
Peppermint contains antioxidants that help prevent cancer, heart disease and other
diseases related to aging.
Some take it to relieve anxiety, tension and stress. Peppermint infusion makes a
healthy and tasty alternative to coffee and ordinary tea. For insomniacs, a cup may help
you get to sleep.
Peppermint tea is recommended for halitosis (bad breath). Its also a powerful
antispasmodic--stops muscle spasms in the digestive tract.
Menthol and camphor eases the muscle tightness that contributes to backaches. Menthol
is a constituent of the mint plants, particularly Peppermint and
Spearmint.
Camphor occurs in Hyssop and
Coriander.
As a tea, a number herbalists suggest using mints (which are antiseptic), specifically
Peppermint because of its menthol to relieve earaches. To treat scabies (contagious
parasitic skin infestation), make a tea combined with Peppermint,
Pennyroyal,
Rosemary,
Sage,
Spearmint and
Thyme
in any proportion. Toss several cups in your bath water. Make sure to boil your clothes
and bedding to rid of any remaining mites.
A herbal formula containing Peppermint,
Spearmint,
Cardamom,
Dandelion and
Turmeric makes a great supplement to dissolve gallstones.
A few drops of the extract in hot water can open up your sinuses or provide a quick
facial. The menthol has mucus-thinning properties which helps in cases of emphysema. When
mixed with a little alcohol or
Vegetable oil and rubbed
on the temples, Peppermint oil along with
Lavender,
Eucalyptus and
Rosemary oil, makes a
great cure for headaches and sinusitis.
Peppermint fights the bacteria that causes tooth decay and gingivitis. Recommended:
make a tea, steep for 10 minutes, sweeten with
Licorice and
either drink it down or use it as a mouthwash.
