Nutmeg

myristica fragrans

spice/bulk

NutmegNutmeg (myristica fragrans) is a native spice from the Moluccas Islands in South Paicific. The tree can grow to 66 feet tall and produce a peach shaped fruit known as the nutmeg apple, which is discarded in favor of the aromatic seed inside. When ripe, the fruit splits to expose a pecan sized nut wrapped in a bright red netting called an aril. The nut and aril are separated and dried. The nut is nutmeg, and the aril yields the spice, mace.

Nutmeg has a variety of health benefits besides adding it to cookies and pies. It calms and helps lower blood pressure and soothes digestive upset. Mixed with a neutral oil and used in a massage it eases joint pain and inflammation. Nutmeg also provides fast relief for diarrhea and toothaches. The therapeutic effects of nutmeg stimulates the cardiovascular system, promotes concentration, acts as ab expectorant, reduces joint inflammation and helps also with liver removing toxins.

Regular nutmeg consumption can relieve joint pain and gout. Put 5-6 drops on a sugar cube or in 1 tablespoon of honey. Add the sugar or honey to a glass of warm milk and sip.
For toothaches, place 1 drop of nutmeg oil on a cotton swab and apply it to the gum area around the tooth. repeat several times a day.

To provide fast relief for diarrhea, dissove three pinches of ground nutmeg in a glass of warm milk and sip slowly. For stomache upset, add a small pinch of nutmeg to peppermint tea or sprinkle nutmeg over 1 tablespoon of honey. The essential oil of nutmeg can also be used as an aromatic diffuser. With a blend of nutmeg, clove and rosemary essential oils in a hanky, it is a used as a reliever for joint pains and banishing fatique.
