MSM is an odorless, water-soluble, white crystalline material that supplies an effective, bio available source of dietary sulfur. It plays a major role in energy production, blood clotting and in the production of collagen, the chief protein that forms the framework for bones, fibrous tissues, skin, hair and nails, and in building enzymes (the tiny helpers that speed up the billions of chemical reactions that take place in your body.) Research suggests that the beneficial effects of garlic (a much touted remedy for curing almost everything) in reducing elevated blood cholesterol, blood pressure and blood sugar may be from the sulfur content of the garlic. MSM, Health World notes, has been shown to have anti-inflammatory effects on the mucous membranes. Thus, it may be helpful for both food allergies (by helping to heal the gut) and for inhalant allergies. It also may be a useful nutrient for those with arthritis. MSM is a naturally occurring sulfur metabolite in human tissues and is present in high amounts in breast milk. A beginning amount is one 500 mg. capsule daily, going up to three or four capsules daily. Recommended for neutralizing and eliminating toxins as well as alleviating environmental and food allergies, pain from inflammatory disorders, gastrointestinal ailments, and infection. The formation of Keratin for hair and nail growth is also dependent on MSM. Studies also suggest that the level of MSM decreases with aging.
