| Kudzu has been used by Chinese healers since 200
B.C. to treat alcohol abuse. Kudzu contains a large amount of isoflavones, which aid in improving blood flow through the coronary arteries. A 1993 study came out with the supposition that Kudzu helps reduce the desire for alcohol and would therefore be helpful in treating alcohol abuse. Some scientitists have isolated the chemical acetaldehyde as the big culprit of Chinese studies attest to the benefits of Kudzu in treating angina (heart disease that causes moderate to severe chest pain). One study of 71 people showed that 49 subjects showed improvement when taking 10-15 grams daily. Kudzu preparations have produced no adverse effects in human trials. Kudzu dilates coronary arteries, increasing blood flow and decreasing blood pressure. Also helps to stabilizes heart rhythm. Kudzu contains daidzin, daidzein and a chemical, puerarin, that has decreased blood pressure in animals by fifteen percent. With 100 times the antioxidant activity of Vitamin E, puerarin also helps prevent heart disease and cancer. Another study involving 52 people, 17 subjects lowered their blood pressure drastically; 30 others showed some benefit. They drank a tea containing about eight teaspoons of Kudzu, up to a liter (about 30 ounces) daily.
