| Juniper is valued by herbalists for its
antiseptic and diuretic qualities. In fact, Juniper is an ingredient in many
over-the-counter diuretics. This herb contains a potent antiviral compound, deoxypodophyllotoxin, that appears to inhibit a number of viruses, including those that cause the flu and herpes. Juniper is excellent for urethral and bladder infections, as well as gout. May also help in amenorrhea (lack of menstruation). A strong tea made with the berries (8 tablespoons in one quart of boiling water and steeped for one hour) makes a great remedy for scalds, burns, sores and infected wounds when affected area is washed with the tea several times a day. When used lukewarm, inhale with a heavy towel over your head, to relieve nose, throat and lung congestion. Recommended by some herbalists for the occasional flare-ups of inflamed conditions such as arthritis. Effective in relieving flatulence and gastric afflictions. Because it is a diuretic, it may be helpful in a variety of ailments, including high blood pressure and congestive heart failure. Remember, diuretics not only increases the flow of urine, it also depletes your Potassium levels.
Juniper should not be taken if you are or if you suspect you're pregnant. Avoid if you have a history of kidney damage or if you have hay fever. Juniper should not be taken for longer than six weeks at a time, because it may irritate the kidneys. Symptoms of overdose include diarrhea, kidney pain, blood in urine and high blood pressure.
