Gotu Kola

Centella asiatica

bulk/capsule/extract

leaf/root

An ancient remedy prized alike by Chinese physicians and Indian Ayurvedic healers. In these cultures it is still thought to promote longevity, similar in its rejuvenating powers to Fo-ti and Ginseng.

It works well as a brain energizer or mental pick-me-up. Some experts have speculated that it prompts the body to manufacture choline, which might explain why it can enhance brain function in mentally retarded children.1 Four capsules per day is recommended.

Recently, a British study showed it to be an effective treatment for leprosy (Hansen's disease). This may be because Gotu Kola contains the chemical asiaticoside, which enables the immune system to destroy bacteria.

Because of its apparent ability to stimulate and nurture skin and the underlying connective tissue, the herb gives us both cosmetic and clinical support in treating skin-related problems. It has proven useful in treating eczema, skin ulcers, surgical wounds, gangrene, skin grafts, traumatic skin injuries, accelerates wound healing2, bruises, abscesses and improves cellulite. The three compounds in Gotu Kola--asiatic, asiaticoside and madecassic--along with Vitamin C, stimulates collagen synthesis, a key element in skin repair.

Gotu Kola is primarily a relaxant, sedative and nervous-system restorative.

The herb of choice in treating and relief for varicose veins and phlebitis. It strengthens the veins and capillaries, thereby improving the flow of blood. It may aid in the healing of blood diseases, improves circulation throughout the body and reduces ankle swelling.3 People with scleroderma (serious overgrowth of connective tissue throughout the body), might benefit as well.

Also, externally it may accelerate the healing of wounds, burns (and minimizes scarring) and relieves inflammatory skin diseases such as psoriasis. Simply rub some extract on the affected areas.
