The powerful mineral, Copper, not only is essential to helping the heart to function correctly, but it also controls cholesterol, sugar, and uric acid levels. In addition, it also increases bone strength, enhances development of red and white blood cells, maintains immune functions, contributes to infant growth, and is a major treatment for rheumatoid arthritis1. Of the 1,140 people who were given Copper , 89 percent lowered their swelling and increased their joint mobility, fevers and other signs of rheumatic activity went into remission for an average of three years2. Maintains the heart's pumping ability, prevents aneurysms, and ensures growth of strong arterial connective tissue that won't rupture. A deficiency and high levels (along with low levels of Zinc) of Copper has been implicated as a possible major contributor to coronary heart disease3. Because it produces collagen in the bone, it is a key supplement especially in older women. It could reduce the frequency of leg fractures4. Women are recommended to take blood tests to check for serum Copper, Zinc, and sometimes Manganese, before taking Copper supplements to ensure proper levels. Premenstrual tension, use of birth control pills, preeclampsia5, breast cancer6, lymphona, and chronic leukemia7, are associated with high levels of Copper. Men may take a cautious supplement of 2-3 mg. per day, balanced by 30 mg. of Zinc. However, more may be taken to treat rheumatoid arthritis, 4-8 mg. per day. Please note that iron and high doses of Vitamin C depletes the body of and reduces Copper absorption by 50 percent.
