Chromium Picolinate is a potent, bio-active source of the essential mineral chromium. It plays a vital role in "sensitizing" the body’s tissues to the hormone insulin, performing these three major roles:

1) The regulation of fat metabolism
2) The regulation of glucose metabolism
3) The regulation of amino acid (protein) metabolism

In working with insulin, it drives the sugar from your blood into the tissues of your body for use or storage. This mineral is so important in sugar tolerance that deficiencies in chromium cause a diabetes-like illness (sugar intolerance) to develop, anxiety, fatigue, stunted growth, and high cholesterol.

Chromium levels fall low during and after childbearing, in childhood diabetes, and in coronary artery disease. Deficiency of chromium during pregnancy may explain the diabetes that develops during pregnancy (gestational diabetes) and through its interaction with insulin may also contribute to the rapid weight gain, fluid retention, and blood pressure some women experience during pregnancy and afterward.

Uncontrolled blood sugar and disturbances of the insulin process account for most of our chronic diseases. Taken regularly, this trace mineral tackles an entire roster of problems caused or worsened by an insulin resistance--including obesity, hypoglycemia (unstable blood sugar), stroke, high blood pressure, Crohn's disease and colitis, migraines, premenstrual tension, ulcers, gastritis, multiple sclerosis, Méničre's disease, seizure disorders, and a host of psychiatric disturbances.

Chromium is far and away the most pivotal nutrient involved in sugar metabolism. More than 90 percent of all Americans are deficient. When your body exhibits low levels of the trace mineral, your craving for sugars grows. But the more sugar you eat, the more you deplete your chromium stores.

Except for supplements, there is no good way to rebuild the body’s stockpile of chromium. The only "food" truly rich in the mineral is brewer’s yeast. Unfortunately, the large number of people who are sensitive to this substance or are susceptible to yeast infections would not be wise to avail themselves of this source.

The process and discovery of the "glucose tolerance factor" (a molecule built around the mineral) marked Chromium's emergence as a very important mineral. Researchers developed compounds that are more easily absorbed and utililized in the body.

It is indispensible for controlling noninsulin-dependent (Type II) diabetes (aka adult-onset diabetes). Type II is the embodiment of insulin resistence. Although family history is a predisposing factor, it develops almost exclusively from years of eating refined carbohydrates. Your body now does not metabolize the Chromium in food, which is why you need the supplement. Once an optimum amount is circulating in your bloodstream, you will find your blood sugar completely under control. At the very least, your doctor may reduce your intake of drugs or insulin injections.[1]

Using 180 people who had Type II diabetes, the US Agriculture Research Service proved that the subjects could stabilize their blood sugar when they took 1000 mcg. (1 mg) of Chromium daily for just two months. In four months, they gained even stronger control of their blood glucose, insulin, and cholesterol.[2]

If you are overweight, besides going on a low-carb diet, taking Chromium supplements is your best bet for losing unwanted pounds. Research shows Chromium works on several fronts:

  1. Reduces sugar cravings.
  2. Even without dieting, the mineral can increase your total lean body mass, which in turn speeds up your metabolism and burns extra fat.[3]
  3. Prevents loss of lean muscle tissue.[4]
  4. Enhances the calorie-burning results of exercise, making weight loss even easier.[5]

A deficiency of Chromium has also been associated with a higher chance of developing heart problems, but not just because it helps with controlling the sugar and losing weight, it also helps raise the blood's concentration of artery-clearing HDL cholesterol and, at the same time, decreases LDL and triglyceride levels. Total cholesterol declines and researchers report that the reduction is more impressive when taken with Niacin.

Did you know that 60 percent of all hypertension (high blood pressure) cases are caused by hyperinsulinemia and insulin? The repeated rise and fall of blood sugar apparently stimulates the body's sympathetic nervous system, which helps regulate blood pressure.

In the search to discover why we grow old, scientists are examining a process called "glycation." It's a form of cell damage and death caused by high blood sugar, and it appears to be a major factor in aging. There's no better manager of blood sugar than Chromium!

In addition, it also contributes to the health of the arteries, may alleviate chronic headaches, treats acne, makes bones strong by increasing DHEA levels[6], and along with Vitamin C, may deter the buildup of pressure inside the eyes. Calcium carbonate can impair your ability to absorb Chromium and sugar increases your need for Chromium and at the same time may increase your loss of Chromium in urine.

  • Symptoms of Deficiency

You may experience anxiety, fatigue, sugar intolerance (borderline diabetes), stunted growth, and high cholesterol.

  • Recommended Dosage

For help in treating obesity and other problems related to insulin resistance, 200-600 mcg. every day. For extreme obesity or full-blown diabetes, between 600 and 1000 mcg. per day. Note that Chromium levels fall low during and after pregnancy, in childhood diabetes, and in coronary artery disease. Symptoms of toxity are rare and may be taken in high doses.

Only usage of the trivalent form (Chromium Picolinate or Nicotinate Glycinate) is recommended, 100 to 200 mcg daily.
