Cat's Claw arrival on the Alternative Medicine scene is
rather timely one. Most people believe the war on cancer is lost, horribly
fatal viruses continue to evolve, and the gross
over-prescription of antibiotics has made us much more vulnerable to
infection. People are turning to natural remedies, and the
"newest" one is Cat’s Claw. (Some speculate
Uña de Gato dates back to the time of the ancient Inca.)
It boosts the immune system to fight off new viral
strains and bacterial disease that no longer responds to antibiotics.
Harvested in the Peruvian rain forest, Cat's Claw is one of the most
widely prescribed herbs. It is used to treat digestive problems, ulcers, arthritis,
swelling and inflammatory ailments.
It possesses antioxidant flavonoids which are thought to
help protect cells from the damaging effects of pollution, sun, chemotherapy
and radiation.
The herb can also be used to lower blood pressure and cholesterol. Contains a number of
compounds (quinovic acid glycosides) that, among other effects, relieves
the symptoms of gout and inhibit cancer and enhances the immune
system.
The Ashaninka Indians of central Peru use the tea to for
"bone pains". They also rely on it as a contraceptive: it prevents
pregnancy for up to four years.
The focus of intense research as an immunostimulant for
use in AIDS and against other viral diseases such as herpes simplex,
shingles and flu. A controlled six-year study suggest that it can delay
the onset of AIDS symptoms in HIV-infected patients and reduce symptoms in
AIDS patients.
