Catnip is well-known for its sedative effects on
the body. A major constituent is nepelactone which is quite similar to valepotriates found
in Valerian Root. Because it is a mild herb, it is frequently
recommended for hyperactive children. But first check with your pediatrician before
administering any herbal remedy to your infant or child.Often it is combined with Chamomile and Lemon Balm to
relieve stress, soothe tension,
nervousness and for insomnia.
To significantly reduce your likelihood of developing cataracts, at least two cups of
Catnip (or mint) tea is recommended. Catnip, being a member of the mint family, releases a
distinctive aroma when it's made into a tea.
Catnip is also effective in the treatment of colds and fevers.
Produces perspiration for colds. Europeans have long used
the herb for stress-induced diarrhea, bronchitis and other upper-respiratory infections,
as well as for its generally calming and healing qualities.
Powdered, it relieves aching teeth and gums.
A strong Catnip tea can be used as a effective eyewash to relieve inflammation and
swelling due to certain airborne allergies, cold and flu and excess alcoholic intake
("bloodshot eyes"). Use with an eye cup and apply several times a day.
According to the Journal of the American Medical Association (1969 and 1976,
236:473), Catnip has similar effects as marijuana i.e., relieving depression, elevating
mood and producing euphoria.
Either smoking or as a tea, Catnip is also very good for overcoming any kind of
dizziness.
