Traditionally used in Native American medicine for its sedative and antispasmodic properties. It is not addictive and dangerous like its close relative, the red poppy. The medicinal portions of the plant are the aerial part. Its habitat is California, but it is also cultivated in central Europe and southern France. The active compounds from the California poppy include the isoquinoline alkaloids, but also include cyanogenic glycosides. Primary effect of these are sleep-inducing.

Useful in treatment of:

Insomnia, enuresis nocturna, reactive agitation. The tea is used as a sedative.

Dosage: This is not generally prescribed, however, it does tend to be a component of some of the standardized preparations used for sedation. Medical and clinical materials are available and efficacy claims have not been documented so that therapeutic applications cannot be verified. A tea can be prepared and taken as a drink. This is prepared using 2 gm. of herb per 150 ml. of water. The liquid extract prepared according to the German Pharmacopoeia is generally given at a single dose of 1-2 ml.

Precautions: There are no recorded side effects or health risks following therapeutic dosages recommended, except for sedation. This should not be taken with any preparation which can cause an additive effect to sedation, such as prescription sleeping medications. Concomitant use of alcohol, etc., should be avoided.

Safety Guideline: Not to be used during pregnancy or while taking MAO inhibitors.
