The small
flowers of camu-camu bush have waxy white petals and an exquisite aroma.
Traditionally made into a juice by people of the rainforest to help
maintain their health, camu-camu has more Vitamin C than any other known
botanical. The highest quality camu-camu contains 30 to 60 times more
Vitamin C than an orange, plus bioflavanoids, and a combination of
phytonutrients unique to the camu-camu fruit. Unfortunately, most of the
commercially prepared camu-camu has a negligible amount of Vitamin C,
which has led to a lack of appreciation of this most potent botanical. It
also contains the amino acids, serine, valine, and leucine, as well as
small amounts of thiamine, riboflavin and niacin. Camu-camu is
traditionally used to support the immune system, to ward off viral
infections, and to help maintain optimal health, especially under
conditions of stress and anxiety, which tend to deplete the immune system.
Camu-camu helps to promote healthy gums, eyes, and skin and supports the
functions of the brain (nervous system) and heart (circulatory system).
Uses: Traditionally, native medicine practioners and herbalists
have recommended camu-camu for:
- Strengthening the immune system
- Improving symptoms of herpes
infections, including mouth blisters, genital blisters, shingles
blisters and other viral infections
- Promoting energy and vitality of
people with chronic immune dysfunction
- Strengthening the nervous system
- Supporting healthy levels of white
blood cell formation
- Detoxifying the body, especially the
liver
- Promoting health of upper respiratory
organs, including lungs, sinuses, nasal passages
- Promoting a healthy heart and
circulatory system
Contains the antibiotic
chemical myricitrin which may fight a wide range of bacteria.
Its astringent action is useful treating
digestive ailments such as diarrhea, food poisoning, chronic gastritis,
dysentery and hemorrhages. Combine it with
Comfrey
root and Agrimony for an effective digestive
astringent. It is also often combined with
Ginger
in treating digestive problems.
Bayberry is
helpful in reducing a fever. A hot tea taken at the first sign of a cold,
cough or flu, is an excellent expectorant. It promotes perspiration, which
allows you to literally sweat it out.
Gargling with
Bayberry mouthwash will soothe sore throats and gums and the local
application will help in healing wounds. A hot compress can be applied over
varicose veins to strengthen blood vessels and helps relieve hemorrhoids.
