In Chinese and Indian medicine, alfalfa has been used for
digestive problems for thousands of year. It has gained popularity in the
West recently for its many health benefits. Alfalfa is one of the most
mineral-rich foods, and is a natural source of every known vitamin.
Alfalfa, a.k.a. lucerne, is a nutritious and restorative tonic. In addition to the
alkaloids asparagine and trigonelline, Alfalfa is rich in beta-carotene, Vitamin C, D, E
and K (the best natural source of Vitamin K), and minerals such as Calcium, Potassium, Magnesium and Iron.
An excellent overall tonic, the Arabs called it the "father of all foods," it
can be used to boost your normal vitality and strength, and it's especially helpful during
convalescence or anemia.

Exciting new research suggests that Alfalfa may reduce blood cholesterol levels and
plaque deposits on artery walls, which precede heart disease and stroke. Another study
suggests that Alfalfa may neutralize carcinogens in the colon.
Alfalfa can stimulate your appetite and help you gain weight. This can be a boon for
those convalescing from a disease, suffering from an immune disorder or simply going
through the ordinary process of aging.
Alfalfa is a good diuretic and thus may be used to treat acute or chronic cystitis
(bladder infection). It may relieve inflammation of the prostate, ease lower back pain and
reduce bloating or water retention. Alfalfa can help in constipation, in symptoms of
rheumatism and arthritis.
If you are nursing, it may also increase the flow of your breast milk. But check first
with your health practitioner.
